In high school, both began working at the store with their dad. Having grown up just a block away, Lester and Margot were immersed in the business even as toddlers. Sitting down with Danny and his children, Lester and Margot, who are in charge of West NYC and Tip Top Kids respectively was an absolute pleasure. There were messages from countless sponsors in the shoe world, congratulating the Wasserman family for their longevity. Danny Wasserman proudly showed me the most recent edition of Footwear News, which was essentially dedicated to Tip Top. When I visited Tip Top Shoes in the summer of 2015, the store was celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary. As Steven so nicely phrased it, "I love working with a group of people who, even if they have other things going on in their lives, are actually just as zealous about the palate-driven experiences we are trying to deliver." SHOW MORE I am certain that a great reason for Box Kite's success is the intense love that the staff has for what they are trying to do. Marks, which approaches craft beer in the same way that Box Kite approaches coffee. "We evaluate dozens and dozens of coffees every month." This approach can be more expensive, but Steven says it is worth it in the long run, pointing to places like Proletariat, on St. When I asked Steven how Box Kite gains access to the best coffees on the market, he let me know that the company always goes the extra mile when it comes to selecting their stock. "Customers are responding very well to this approach," Steven said. Steven informed me that they also try to create an educational "sensory experience" for customers in the hopes of teaching coffee drinkers more about the farming, roasting, and brewing that goes into each cup. The store carefully curates its coffees for each season in an effort to introduce people to the best roasts in the industry that may not be available in other places in New York. It is like a museum of coffee: "We are a showroom for literally the world's best coffees," Steven stated. Like the original location, the 72nd Street shop showcases different roasts everyday. Though the Upper West Side and East Village are very different places, Steven assured me that both communities have been very receptive to the coffee shop. "There seemed to be a lack of highly specialized coffee choices in the area," Steven explained. I spoke to the manager of the Upper West Side spot, Steven Latham, who informed me that the owner lives nearby, and so is very familiar with the neighborhood and thought it would be a great place to open a second location. I was eager for them to open in 2015, as I had visited their other successful location several times on St. Box Kite has the ultimate ambience for a coffee shop: tiny and cozy, with eye-catching Victorian wallpaper and the warm smell of roasting beans.
